José Antonio Bastos is president of MSF Spain since December 2010.
He is a specialist in Family and Community Medicine and Tropical Medicine studies and Master of Public Health in London. After years of practice of family medicine in Spain, made his first field mission with MSF in 1991, on the border between Turkey and Iraq, assisting Kurdish refugees fleeing latter country during the first WarGulf. He continued working with MSF in Bolivia, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. He was then responsible for the Emergency Unit and Director of Operations MSF Spain, and Director of Operations MSF Holland, responsibilities often took him back to the field, to contexts such as Croatia, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Colombia and Chechnya. Throughout all these missions, has worked in contexts of conflict and displacement, nutritional crises or emergencies outbreaks like cholera or meningitis. Between 2006 and 2010, he worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with missions in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan.
